Best hat ever
I'm pretty sure that this is the same model that I bought when I still worked outdoors in California in the mid nineties. I've carried it with me for all those many years and it still does the job, but it's time for a fresher version, so I went to Solumbra to purchase a replacement, perhaps a new color this time. It's lightweight, fits perfectly, looks stylish, and makes a day in the sun easy on the face and eyes.

My wife and I bought these hats a few months ago for Sun protection. Great hat. We walk daily and sail frequently. This hat's brim retains its shape in winds above 20 knots all day long. During our last sail, the wind instrument recorded wind gusts as high as 27 knots and our hats' brims held their shape, hence uninterrupted sun protection. Along with a neck gaiter clipped to the hat's drawstring, covering from my ear lobes to bottom lip down, I received zero sun exposure on my face and neck. Only a full four inch wide brim will do all this comfortably. My hat size is right between two sizes and I chose the smaller of the two sizes. The hat was very snug at first but loosened up to a perfect fit in a few days. My $80 Tilley hat now sits on the closet shelf looking stylish but sorely lacking in affording sun protection. One recommendation to the hat manufacturer: look at the retention system on the Tilley hat and know that that system is the best. Incorporate that system in your hat and you will have a six-star hat!

Shapeless; very lightweight fabric crown
Good for a day at the beach maybe. I'm a farmer, and needed something durable to stand up to my work in my orchard; straw hats can't stand up to the frequent in and out of the tree canopies. The brim seems well made and wide for good shading; the crown is very light unstructured fabric. The "rustproof brim rod" must be plastic, you cannot bend it (permanently) to shape the brim. I like that it is made in the USA. So I needed, and expected, a more durable crown, as well as being able to shape the brim with the rim wire. I've only worn it a couple of days, and I can tell it wont be long before I snag the crown on a branch.

washes well!
Surprised! I followed the instructions for washing my 3 year old very grubby looking hat... I used a bit of All free and Clear in a basin with tepid water... a few minutes later, the hat was blue again and the water was brown. First hat I've had that would actually come clean when washed!

Best sun hat
I have 2 of these (I let one of my kids take one). The style protects better than sunscreen, is easy to spot-clean, has adjustable fit, and folds flat to pack in a small suitcase. Plus it looks nice when worn.

Great Hat
I've been using Solumbra products for over 10 years. This I would say is my "staple" go to hat. Very functional, no frills, sturdy and reliable ! I believe it has a wire in it. Drawstring under chin keeps it in place for those windy days !

How to Measure

Most Solumbra clothing is oversized.
It is designed with generous proportions to give you freedom to move around. There's no need to order larger sizes. Exceptions are noted in product copy.
Inseam:
Measurement from inside crotch seam to bottom of hem.
Unisex Tall Sizing:
Unisex tall shirts are sized for customers over 6'4" and have sleeve length measurements from center back of M 36"; L 381/2"; XL and 2XL 391/2".
Women's Tall Sizing:
Women's tall pants have a 34" inseam.
Women's Petite Sizing:
Petite garments are sized for customers up to 5'3".
Hats:
Measure around your head with measuring tape above your eyebrows and ears.
Gloves:
Measure around hand across the knuckles (exclude thumb). The number of inches determines glove size. If you are right-handed, measure your right hand and vice versa. People with extra long fingers, or who would like a looser fit should consider ordering a size up.
Shade Sleeves:
Sizing for this garment is based on your Solumbra shirt size.
